Frame Up

Today was a bit heavy on the wallet: I picked up a Surly Big Dummy Frame, BB7 front and rear disc brakes, a handlebar, cables, a stem, a headset, a seat post, a seat, cranks, rear panniers and snap deck, and a bottom bracket. Total price with shipping: $1216; much less than the $2600 price of a complete Big Dummy, but still a lot of cash.
Still remaining are the wheels (need to see if I can cram a 700c front and rear wheel in the frame), the gears (I'm still considering single speed with a much larger front ring), and tires (size will depend on the wheels I use).
So I definitely could have bought an old car by now, but where's the fun in that? Here's an interesting dataset: The truck I have now costs me $2125 per year to fuel/service/maintain!...
not including insurance. Once I get this bike up and running, I expect to spend $18.25 a year on 'fuel' and have set aside a 200 maintenance pool, totaling $218.25/year for the bike. If we count in the $20/month tax rebate for biking to work, my total yearly operating cost is $-21.75. In short, we're talking two year ROI, even without selling the truck. If this bike thing works out well, I'll definitely sell the truck, which means the bike'll pay for itself in less than a year. Not to mention all the other ways this thing is a tax deduction :).
